Vitamin D: Relation with Blood Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol has got a very important function to perform and that is to act as an ancestor of vitamin D. It is worth noting that the sources of vitamin D are generally animal foods and they are all high in cholesterol. Thus, inhibiting synthesis of cholesterol inhibits synthesis of vitamin D too. Thus, you must understand that if you are on a low cholesterol diet then actually you are on a diet that is deficient in vitamin D. Sunlight is a very rich source of vitamin D. Thus avoiding sun would mean that cholesterol is not being converted into vitamin D.
If you are a cholesterol patient then you must be taking tablets to lower cholesterol and must be on a low cholesterol diet. But while you are doing so, keep in mind that you will require vitamin D supplements. This is because vitamin D is vital for maintaining health of bones as well as brain. Vitamin D also performs vital functions in regulation of blood sugar and boosting the immune system.   If you want to avoid deficiency of vitamin D then in that case you must have foods that are rich in vitamin D and the list includes shellfish, lard, cod-liver oil, egg yolks.
