Who Should Not Use Iron Supplements? |
Iron supplements should not be taken by average healthy persons. Unless a person is tested, and the test confirms iron deficiency, he should avoid iron supplements. It is misleadingly believed that iron supplements can help in treating fatigue. Iron supplements when taken unnecessarily cause an excess of iron inside the body of person, which can lead to serious problems like putting the person at a greater risk to cancers and heart attacks. Hemochromatosis is a condition which is developed as a result of too much iron in the body. This condition ultimately damages the liver, causes diabetes, etc. Most importantly, people suffering from blood disorders, are more prone to iron overload which puts the body at risk to many other problems. People who often get blood transfusions should be very careful in taking iron supplements. Only on the strict recommendation of a qualified doctor should one start taking iron supplements. Furthermore, people using medications like those used to cure GERDs, Zyloprim, NSAIDs, Colestipol, etc should not used iron supplements, or should take their supplements after a sufficient interval of time after taking these medications. This is because iron interacts with such medications like quinolones, levodopa and ACE inhibitors, thereby defeating the purpose and sometimes even causing problems.. |
