Cardiovascular medications such as calcium channel blockers and blood pressure lowering medications with a magnesium supplement can increases the chances of negative side effects caused by the medications. Commonly used antacids contain magnesium hydroxide which can increase the absorption of glyburide and glipizide. These are used to control sugar levels in a diabetic person. This may lead to a reduction of dosage of the diabetic medication. Diuretics are found to be reducing the magnesium level in the body. Therefore doctors normally recommend a magnesium supplement along with the medication to maintain the level of magnesium in the blood. Levothyroxine is taken for an under active thyroid. Magnesium can reduce the effectiveness of the medication. Many antacids are also known to have magnesium content in them. |
