Calcium supplements and its benefits for a nursing mother |
A nursing mother requires about 1200 milligrams of calcium on a daily basis. This amount of calcium is equal to four glasses of milk. A decreased level of calcium than the required level will cause the calcium in the bones to be used up by the body, thus damaging your bones. A nursing mother with low in estrogen level is at a high risk of calcium deficiency. In these mothers normally the calcium requirement of the body is fulfilled by the calcium present in their bones. This can cause many joint and bone problems. Some studies suggest that the loss of bone during the breast feeding and pregnancy is a temporary loss. The reversal of the bone damage is completed within the next six months of time. Calcium demand of the mother increases with the growing baby’s requirement. Adequate calcium is necessary to carter the needs of the baby’s requirement also. Nursing mothers can have food products with high in calcium such as fortified cereals, juice, cheese and milk. These food products can be incorporated in the daily diet of the mother. It is also important to have a consultation before taking calcium supplements by the mother. High dosages of calcium supplements can be dangerous for the mother and the child. |
