How effective is a calcium supplement as treatment for osteoporosis?

Lack of calcium in the body can lead to osteoporosis and bone damage. Calcium is essential for the proper development of the bones. People who are deficient of calcium are subjected to maximum risk of fractures and joint problems. Dietary calcium is vital for the strengthening of the bones.  It augments bone density. There are several forms of calcium supplements that can be found over the counter. These supplements often do not require any prescription. However, it would be recommended to seek for a medical advice before taking calcium supplements. Calcium helps in maintaining healthy bones. However, it cannot protect you against the bone loss caused due to smoking, not enough exercise, lack of estrogen and alcohol.
