Who should use Iron Supplements? |
Iron supplements are most widely used to treat anaemia. Anaemia can be due to various reasons, but iron supplements are only used for patients after it is confirmed through tests that anaemia is due to iron deficiency in the body. Mostly in many cases, it is believed that pregnant women should increase their intake of iron. Even though it is medically confirmed that the need for iron increases during pregnancy, a pregnant women should take only the prenatal vitamins recommended by her doctor. Additional supplements, unless suggested, should be avoided. Generally, iron supplements are needed by people who don’t take or absorb sufficient iron, teenage girls and people suffering from problems like renal failures. It is recommended that vegetarians should use iron supplements owing to the fact that vegetables not only have less levels of iron, but iron from plants is likely to be poorly absorbed as compared to iron from meat. In addition, people suffering from like arthritis and absorption difficulties are more likely to suffer from iron deficiency. Moreover, women experiencing heavy menstrual flows are also more vulnerable to iron deficiency. However, it is always recommended that unless prescribed by the general physician, one should not take large doses of iron supplements. |
